Team Honda’s Johnny Campbell and Steve Hengeveld took a major leap toward defending their Best in the Desert's Silver State Series crown.
July 15, 2005

Nevada - Team Honda’s Johnny Campbell and Steve Hengeveld took a major leap toward defending their Best in the Desert's Silver State Series crown — and holding onto the number one plate that goes with it — by sweeping all four days of the first-ever McMillin Nevada 1000.

The four-day victory spree aboard their factory Honda XR650R also helped set the pace for what culminated in a 1-2-3 Honda sweep that saw fellow Red Riders Robby Bell and Kendall Norman take second and Mike Childress (who rode the entire race solo, with still-recuperating teammate Chuck Dempsey waiting, if needed, in the wings) third overall. The latter team also took first Four-stroke Pro honors.

“Everything went as planned,” said Campbell after. “We had a strategy and we stuck to it. We had a couple obstacles to overcome, but all in all, Steve took the majority of the race and rode like a true champion and just pulled the lead. So, whenever I got on the bike, it was just get the bike back to him and not make any mistakes.”

The event wrapped up with its third straight loop ending in Tonopah, though this final-day outing was a relative sprint of 119 miles. The good news, however, is that it ended very much as it began — with the Honda team leading and finishing first. In fact, feeling the overall win pretty well secured by day four, the Honda team put Hengeveld on the bike for the entire last day, and he once again ran away from the field, clocking an unofficial final loop time of 2:11:57, which brought Campbell/Hengeveld’s four-day aggregate to 17:27:00.

The Bell/Norman team started the day fourth off the line after holding second for the majority of day three, only to lose it in the final miles when Norman got momentarily lost. That dropped them back in the overall time standings as well, and they knew it they would have to count on mistakes or misfortune of those in front of them to get back into second behind their veteran American Honda teammates.

As luck would have it, that’s precisely what happened to both the Andy Grider/Chris Blais (KTM) and Shane Esposito/David Pearson (Kawasaki) squads.

“It was a very interesting day — lots of ups and downs after Kendall got lost yesterday,” reported Bell. “But then I got the call over the radio that the Kawi didn't start, didn't make it to the start line. I was pretty much dancing! Basically, after that all we had to do today was just keep the KTM in sight.”

So, while others fell off — or entirely out — Bell and Norman found themselves in second behind Hengeveld, and back into second in total time. So even when fellow Red Rider Mike Childress passed them near the end, they didn't really mind.

As Bell admitted, “Mikey caught us, which was fine because he had a reason to push to try to catch the KTM. All we wanted to do was finish second overall, and we were stoked!”

For his part, Childress’ runner-up finish on the day landed him back on the podium with the third-best total time.

"It was a tough week for some people," as Bell noted. “Our week's been great. We didn't really have any problems — well, Kendall got lost [on day three] and that was the only problem we had all week, so you couldn't ask for a much better race.”
